Annoying Photoshop CS4 Compass Thingy
Not that you should ever be designing with a touchpad… but! still annoying when you are trying to do some Photoshop on a plane and you keep rotating your image and there’s no dumb “turn off” switch. Found this plugin straight from Adobe:
Turn off the Adobe CS4 Touchpad Compass Feature
Adobe answered our prayers, now just integrate it into the preferences.

This seems to be the bane of Andy’s existence so I on his behalf I thank you for pointing this out.
Also, I only design with the touchpad…
How do you integrate this download into the preferences? This compass think is driving me crazy. I am not a professional, I just use Photoshop for scrapbooking and I hate this compass. Thank you
@ Christine
You need to install it in the plugins folder of your photoshop software. Depending if you are on a mac or windows machine, it will be in a different place. You can try searching “Plug-Ins” there should be a few in there already like Automate, Effects, Parser, etc…
Thank you for publishing this solution. I couldn’t figure out how to get rid of the compass and it was annoying.
thanks Jon, as yes, this too I found super annoying on ther mac when working on plane etc…
so I downloaded the plug in, open it, and installed it in the plug in folder
question is, and sorry if this is obvious, but how to turn it on and off
let me know
thanks
Thank you! I hate that thing!
whoever came up with this thing??! what a horrible, horrible idea! THANK YOU so much for the fix! Adobe, stop making stupid updates please <3
Thanks!
Thank you so much — that stupid compass thing has been driving me crazy!!
Thanks this is so far the worst feature from Adobe but I feel the same as @sonny. I’ve already installed the plug-in in my plug-ins folder but I have no idea how to make it work. I loved how I googled annoying compass in photoshop and I knew I wasn’t alone! Thanks again!!
Plugins must be the best invention of all times. Being able to plugin interesting features as to what one is doing is so important. Real viral traffic generators have though been missing but just on market is the iLikeViral plugin which I will try.
After you drag the plugin into the “Plug-ins” folder you will need to quit and restart PS – rotation should no longer occur. I am guessing to re-enable it you would need to remove the plug-in from the folder and restart again. (Why you would ever want this enabled is beyond me)
yo, that plugin totally didn’t do anything…. is there some way to “turn it on” or find the preferences to set it? i’m still seeing the compass.
whoops.
OK CS5 – its is a built-in preference.
should have checked there…

Thank you!!!
Two years later and this plug-in is still making a difference. Oh, and I’ve been designing on a trackpad for many years now, same with all the designers I know. I actually feel like it’s more natural to use my fingers.
Oh GOD I hate this stupid, stupid thing. Why, WHY? Who on earth thought this would be a good feature, was Satan whispering in their ear? I don’t get it.
I have a long checklist of improvements I would make to Photoshop if I worked for Adobe, especially as a web designer.
Ah! This is so amazing I could cry from joy!
Thanks very much for the excellent tip. Good-bye damn compass thingy!
Thanks for the link! I installed it, I think, but I don’t know how to test whether it comes up other than to invoke Murphy’s Law: Be in the middle of something and do something anyone would normally do.
Thank you,
thank you,
thank you,
stuff like that pisses me off no end
